  Ian Carter

Hometown: Derby  Age: 32

Introduction...
Ian (also known as Carver - not because he's some kind of euro-carver, but because he spent his second boarding trip drinking vodka like Jim Carver from 'The Bill' - for those of you that remember that!), is the best rider out of the Board 4 Life members. We attribute this to the fact he seems to have no 'fear-gland'. He's also just plain better than us - and due to this we hate him.

In the 2003 AIM boardercross event at Milton Keynes Xscape Carver managed to reach the semi-finals, making him a very creditable joint 9th at the end of the day. Later in that year he competed at the frankly scary looking AIM Big Air at Castleford Xscape

Since then Ian's main focus has been in getting BASI qualified. To this end he headed to Tignes, even a 'minor' collarbone fracture from a Tamworth rainbow rail didn't stop him! Bering no malice to Tamworth snowdome he spent some time doing instructor training there and in 2006 passed his BASI 3 qualifications after a two week course in Zermatt.

During the years he has been to a whole host of resorts; Risoul, Sauze D'oulx, Alpe D'Huez, Chamonix and Val D'Isere to name but a few. He has been heli boarding in Banff and has his own unique interpretation of what a 'nice little drop off is'!

So who, how, what got you started with snowboarding?

Beer..pub …mates… what more can I say!?

What's your current board setup?

05 Option Makkinen with Cartel bindings

And what stance/angles do you ride with?

+20 / -10 ..I’m set up quite wide at the moment.

What do you most love about snowboarding?

The initial panic of getting out of a helicopter until you have your board in your hands.

Have you been in many competitions?

Sure, I’ve been involved in a few AIM Big Air and Boarder-X comps but haven’t progressed further than Quarter-finals.

Are you more of a freestyler or freerider?

Freeride…but I know the confidence and control from freestyle really helps, so I keep the practice up.

What's your favourite:

* Trick? BS3

* Resort? Risoul

* Saying?D’oh!

* Snowboarding memory?

Strangely enough the two hard weeks of self-analysis and getting stressed about snowboarding for the first time ever..but finding it all worth it when I was told I had become an Instructor.

* Drink? RBV remains a great starter after a days boarding..and not forgetting a morning vodka to get you on your toes.

Had any particularly bad slams?

A few, all involving rails. An awkward rainbow rail resulted in torn ligaments and a busted collarbone.

How do you think your riding has progressed over the last couple of years?

My freestyle has leveled, but all the work put into becoming an Instructor (BASI) has greatly improved the rest of my boarding

Is there anything you don't like about snowboarding?

The severe withdrawal symptoms that are mostly synonymous with Brits

What advice would you give to someone who's thinking about taking up riding?

Join the forums and get down to your local slope!

What interests other than snowboarding do you have?

Mountain Biking is my sport away from my snowboard. Board4Life has been great to build up

What music are you into?

From Tiesto to Metallica..the list is endless..

What are your aims for the future?

Heading to New Zealand for a life with mountains ..and find a magic formula to reverse the effects of global warming.

Any shout outs?

All my drinking and riding partners that are spread across the globe!
