Hometown: Kendal Dryslope!

Introduction...

This'll have to be a quick one as I'm trying to pack for Bansko as I'm typing this (something that's not overly easy to do!) Coincidentally Si also headed off to Bansko in Feb 2007, where he wooped our fastest time for the 'home run' (conditions clearly must have been better then!). And that was actually his first time at a mountain resort! So what are we doing sponsoring him you may think? Well Si has been riding up Kendal Dryslope for some time, his enthusiasm and rapid snowboard skill progression here have helped him land a clothing deal with us.

The latest news from Si was that he entered the Kendal K-Jam 07 (which Board 4 Life also sponsored), his plans mountain wise are indeterminate at the moment, no doubt he'll be hitting where the snow is the sweetest.

Read on to learn about this young ripper, King of Kendal and Master of txt spk...

So who, how, what got you started with snowboarding?

Me and a mate were watching TV and thought it looked quite fun so we gave it a shot at the local slope. My mate quit after 2 weeks but I kept going.

What's your current board set-up?

Board – Gnu Carbon High beam 156

Boots – Salmon Malamutes

Bindings – Burton Cartels

And what stance/angles do you ride with? +12 - 6

What do you most love about snowboarding? The friends I have made, there always supporting me and pushing me forward.

Have you been in many competitions? Not as of yet, my first "proper" comp was the K-JAM 2006 but I am looking to enter many more in the future.

Are you more of a freestyler or freerider? Definitely more of a freestyler, but I’m always looking for a new line to ride, yet to try tree runs and cliff drops.

Definitely more of a freestyler, but I’m always looking for a new line to ride, yet to try tree runs and cliff drops.

What's your favourite?

  • Trick? FS 360 Nosegrabs

  • Place to ride? The local slope as of yet

  • Saying? " I like it" or "Nice one"

  • Snowboarding memory? "When it snowed and me and the local crew went up the golf course and built a kicker. Good Laugh

  • Riding buddy? All of my mates that I have met at the slope, and Nathan Jackson and Paula Little who have recently started riding with me (friends from school).

Had any particularly bad slams? The worst one I have had was when I was first attempting board slides and didn’t Ollie high enough, board hit the front of the rail and I slammed my face straight into it. Bust my nose open, that’s probably the only bad one I've had.

How do you think your riding has progressed over the last couple of years?

As I have only be riding 2 years, I think I have progressed a lot, more over the last season, looking to progress the most this and next season.

Is there anything you don't like about snowboarding? When you get a mental block over the kicker or the rail. Takes you ages to come round from it. But otherwise no.

What advice would you give to someone who's thinking about taking up snowboarding? Just get straight into it, and don’t quit if you think your not good, different people progress at different rates.

What interests other than snowboarding do you have? Music, I don’t think I can go a day without listening to music, more into the punk. Never miss a chance to get to a good punk gig or festival; best weekend of my life was "Wasted Festival"

Nice one so what bands in particular are you into? Rancid, Leftover Crack, Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy’s, U.S. Bombs ECT.

What are your aims for the future? Just to enjoy myself, would like to improve as much as I can, and get abroad as much as possible.

Any shout outs? All of my mates who have supported me so far, Debbie and Craig Harper for their hard work put into the K-JAM 2006, Dave Wilson for basically teaching me everything I know, James Boon for his tips here and there, Tom (from Thrilly - can't spell his last name lol), and a shout to his webzine (www.monthrag.com). And just to everyone who rides at Kendal Ski Slope.

If you have anything you'd like to ask Si drop us a mail at SimonWard@board4life.co.uk and we'll pass them on to him.
